NEWS AND VIEWS
Wi-Fi 101

Wi-Fi 101 - Download Images to View Most of today’s Wi-Fi routers come with two radios, 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz along with a wired connection. If practical, the best choice is almost always wired. However, most people prefer the mobility and flexibility of using Wi-Fi around the house. In this case, MVT’s Wi-Fi 6 router works with your devices to negotiate the Wi-Fi frequency that will give you the best performance. To learn more about MVT’s Wi-Fi 6 router, visit our webpage.

MVT believes that knowledge is key, and we have prepared a list of pros and cons for each type of connection so you can choose what’s best for you depending on your needs.

Wired:
Pro: Fastest and most reliable.

Con: A wire is required and this is not always the most practical option.

2.4 Ghz
Pros:
  1. Most Wi-Fi devices work at this frequency.
  2. You’ll get the best range (goes the furthest).
  3. Some smart home devices will only work with 2.4 Ghz.
Cons:
  1. Speed. The theoretical max speed is 300 Mb. Typical max speeds are in the 40 Mb range.
  2. Interference: Many devices operate at this frequency such as cordless phones, baby monitors, microwave ovens, and Bluetooth. Try standing next to a running microwave oven while listening to music with your Bluetooth headphones. There is a good chance that the microwave will interrupt your Bluetooth. The same thing happens with your home Wi-Fi.
  3. Wi-Fi channels are like lanes on a freeway. There are less lanes that run on 2.4 Ghz which means more chances for overlapping and competing resources on that lane.
5 Ghz
Pros:
  1. Fastest wireless speeds. While the theoretical max speed is 1200 Mb, we see speeds in the 500 Mb range with newer phones and tablets. This is more than 10 times what we see with 2.4 Ghz.
  2. Less Interference: There are fewer applications using this frequency — no Bluetooth, microwave ovens, etc. competing on the same frequency.
  3. There are more Wi-Fi channels to choose from. In other words, the freeway has more lanes and less overlap.
Cons:
  1. Coverage area is a little smaller. Think shorter distance but stronger connection.
  2. Not all devices work at 5 Ghz—especially older devices.
The good news is that MVT is here to help! We can advise you on which type of connection is best for your devices and particular needs. Remember to check out MVT’s Total Wi-Fi options and give us a call if you have questions or are looking to improve your connection, 702-397-2601.
