AI for Real Life: How to Get What You Need Safely
By now, you've probably heard a lot about artificial intelligence—or maybe you've already tried tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, or similar assistants. These tools can be genuinely helpful: writing emails, answering questions, summarizing long documents, even helping you cook dinner with what's in your fridge.
But like any powerful tool, AI works best when you understand how to use it wisely. Here are a few things worth keeping in mind.
Treat it like a helpful stranger, not a trusted friend. AI assistants are designed to be useful, but they don't actually know you…and they shouldn't. Be thoughtful about what personal information you share, and avoid sharing things like passwords, financial account details, or sensitive health information. Most AI tools store conversations to improve their systems, so think of anything you type as potentially visible to others down the road.
Don't believe everything it tells you. AI can sound incredibly confident, even when it's wrong. These tools are trained on massive amounts of information, but they can make mistakes, misremember facts, or even generate false information (this is sometimes called "hallucinating"). If an AI gives you information you plan to act on—a medication interaction, a legal question, a news claim—take a moment to verify it before you trust it completely.
Use it as a starting point, not a final answer. AI is a fantastic brainstorming partner and a great first draft. It can help you get unstuck, spark ideas, or simplify a complicated topic. Just remember that the final judgment is always yours. Real experts, like doctors, lawyers, and accountants, bring an understanding of your specific situation that no chatbot can replicate.
When in doubt, keep it general. You don't need to share personal details to get great results from AI. Instead of "My 8-year-old daughter has been having headaches, what should I do?" try, "What are common causes of headaches in children?"
AI is one of the most exciting tools to come along in a while, and it has real potential to make everyday life a little easier. With a little awareness, you can enjoy the benefits while staying in control of your information—and your decisions.
