Not All Internet Is Created Equal (July 2026)

Remember when getting online meant listening to a symphony of buzzes and whirrs while your modem dialed in—and then waiting for a single webpage to load? Those days are long gone. Today there are more ways than ever to connect, and they’re all dramatically faster than that 56kbps crawl. Here’s a plain-English breakdown of what’s out there.

Fiber Optic Broadband

Fiber internet runs on thin strands of glass —each about 1/10th the width of a human hair—that carry data as pulses of light. It’s the gold standard of internet technology, and for good reason.

Pros: Delivers faster speeds than any other technology. With fiber, you’re much more likely to get the speed you’re paying for, regardless of how far your home is from MVT’s equipment. With other technologies, your experience can vary significantly based on your distance from infrastructure.

Cons: Fiber can cost a bit more than some other options—though given what you get, most people find it’s worth every penny.

Fixed Wireless

Fixed wireless delivers internet via radio waves from a nearby tower to an antenna mounted on your home—no phone lines or cable required.

Pros: Since it travels through the air, it’s free from the wear and degradation that affects physical lines. Speeds are typically comparable to cable. Fixed wireless providers are often local and community-focused, and most don’t impose data caps.

Cons: You’ll need a clear line of sight to the tower (usually within 10 miles), and like anything that travels through the air, the signal can be affected by heavy weather or environmental obstacles. You also will share the network with your neighbors, so when there is high traffic online (think evenings when many are streaming TV or movies), you’ll most likely have a slower experience.

Cable

Cable internet piggybacks on the same copper coaxial infrastructure used for cable TV.

Pros: Widely available and generally reliable, with solid speeds—though not quite in fiber’s league.

Cons: Because you share bandwidth with your neighbors, things can slow down during peak hours. Many areas are served by a single large cable, and throttling when you exceed bandwidth thresholds is common.

DSL

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) delivers internet over your existing phone lines at frequencies that don’t interfere with voice calls, so you can surf and talk at the same time.

Pros: Often one of the more affordable options. Since you have a dedicated line, your neighbors’ usage doesn’t affect your speeds. No new wiring required.

Cons: Speeds are slower than cable or fiber, and performance can drop the farther you are from the provider’s central hub. Some DSL plans include data caps.

Satellite

Satellite internet bounces your signal between a ground hub, a satellite in orbit, and a dish at your home—every click you make makes that full round trip.

Pros: It can reach remote and rural areas where other infrastructure hasn’t arrived yet. Services like Starlink have made meaningful improvements to speed and latency in recent years.

Cons: Latency is still higher than ground-based options because of the distance the signal travels. Coverage can be disrupted by severe weather and terrain like deep canyons. Many plans still carry data limits and speeds are advertised as “up to” which means only in perfect conditions (think: ideal weather and not many users online) will you actually reach those speeds. Most often, homeowners are required to do their own installation and there is no local support when service issues arise.

With all the options that are out there, it’s easy to be overwhelmed or lured into trying something new, but tested and true, fiber is still top-notch and the best bang for your buck. We are confident you’ll be satisfied with your fiber internet from MVT for decades to come.
