What the Heck
is a VPN—and is it Something I Really Need?
A VPN or Virtual
Private Network is a private connection between your PC (or other smart device) and a remote server. This connection
is protected by encryption. Remote workers often use a VPN to securely
connect to their business networks; however, people are now starting to use
VPNs to protect their privacy. A VPN uses the server’s information to browse
the internet rather than revealing your true network information—so, anyone
who is trying to track user data sees the information associated with the VPN
server, rather than your device.
Using a VPN comes with a few disadvantages Is your privacy absolute? Not really. With a VPN, your Internet Service
Provider isn’t able to see where you’re going, but
the VPN provider and Google will know.
VPNs are known to slow down internet connection speeds. Creating and
maintaining the VPN uses up bandwidth and requires additional time to be
spent on encryption and it makes you dependent upon the VPN server’s internet
connection. These factors can affect the connection speeds you experience.
Finally, using a VPN can create conflicts with services that rely on using
your internet address to determine where you live. Since a VPN masks your
true location, the ability to stream local sports and other local content can
be adversely affected.
Make the choice that’s right for you At MVT, we respect the values that drive your decisions—and we invite you to
make your own choices as you consider the possible benefits of using a VPN.
However, it’s also important to us that you also understand the often understated negative impacts using a VPN can have on
your service.
