| | |  Why a Static IP Address Is Ideal for Your Home If you are a gamer, work remotely, or rely on a home security system, a static IP address can offer the stability and reliability you need to keep everything running smoothly. What is an IP address? An internet address, or IP address, is a unique number assigned to every device connected to the internet. It allows devices to communicate with each other. There are two types of IP addresses: IPv4 and IPv6. While IPv4 supports about 4.3 billion addresses, IPv6 offers a virtually limitless supply, but IPv4 is still more commonly used today. Most home internet setups use dynamic IP addresses, which change periodically. Your router requests an IP address from your Internet Service Provider (ISP), and it’s usually leased for 24 hours. When the lease expires, it’s renewed, often keeping the same address unless there’s an interruption. A static IP address remains constant and doesn’t change. It’s typically hardcoded into a device, such as a router or server. You might need a static IP address in certain situations where consistency is key. Benefits of Using a Static IP Address:
