Better Wi-Fi Coverage for Your Home

It’s been said that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. The same is true for your internet reception—and often, the weakest link is the Wi-Fi inside your home. Fortunately, this is a weakness that can usually be remedied—and there are a few clever devices that can help.

The three most common devices for improving your Wi-Fi signal are:

Repeater: Think of a repeater as a type of copy machine that duplicates the Wi-Fi signal it receives and repeats it down the line. Unfortunately, if it’s placed in an area of your home that has a weak signal, it will simply copy the weak signal and pass that on. There are a few situations where they come in handy, but if you really need to extend your reach and require both fast internet and a lot of bandwidth, repeaters generally aren’t a recommended solution.

Extender: The terms “extender” and “repeater” are often used interchangeably, but an extender is more like having a second router in your home. The extender is connected to your home Wi-Fi router via a cable and will have its own Wi-Fi name (SSID). While a better solution than a repeater in most cases, the extender still comes with a couple of drawbacks:
  • Moving around your house with your internet-connected device will require reconnecting your device to the extender every time you change location.
  • In some cases, the signal from your extender can cause interference with your home router.
Mesh: A mesh unit is almost always the best option. It uses two or more devices, sometimes called “nodes,” to create a strong, secure Wi-Fi network that provides excellent coverage, while allowing you to move easily around your home.

Most often, MVT recommends using mesh units for providing the best coverage—and that’s exactly what we offer as part of our Total Wi-Fi service!
