How Fast Is Your Internet, Really? (Sept 2026)
Ever wonder if you’re actually getting the speed you’re paying for? The good news: there’s a free, unbiased way to check, and it only takes a couple of minutes.
Running a Speed Test (It’s Easier Than You Think)
Here’s how to run one:
- For the most accurate read, use a desktop or laptop and visit speedtest.net and press Go. That’s it!
- Or, on a phone or tablet, download the free Speedtest by Ookla app from the App Store or Google Play. Open the app or website and click Go. In just a few seconds, you’ll see your download speed, upload speed, and ping.
- For the most accurate read, run it while connected to your home Wi-Fi (not cellular data), and try it at a few different times of day.
That’s all it takes to get a clear picture of what’s really coming into your home.
Result Looking Lower Than Your Plan? Here’s Why.
Modern phones, tablets, and laptops within about 15 feet of the router, with minimal obstructions, are generally capable of testing speeds up to 500 Mbps. Speeds above that get trickier to measure over Wi-Fi and usually require a device and connection built for higher throughput, not your typical phone or tablet. If you’re testing a gig-speed plan, a wired Ethernet connection is really the better option (keep in mind that many newer laptops don’t have a built-in Ethernet port, so you may need a USB-to-Ethernet adapter, and the adapter itself can sometimes limit the top speed you’re able to measure).
If your results are significantly lower than what you’re paying for, give us a call and we’ll help you figure out why. It could be an older router or device, a lot of people or devices using the connection at once, less-than-ideal Wi-Fi conditions, or something on our end worth looking into. Either way, we’re happy to help sort it out.
Know a Friend Who Should Check Theirs?
Here’s a fun one: if you know someone who isn’t an MVT customer yet, tell them to run the test above. MVT will pay them $50 in cash just to see the screenshot, any result, any provider, other than MVT. All they have to do is bring it by our office at 1120 N Moapa Valley Blvd in Overton, Monday through Friday, 8 to 5. No signup required, and the $50 leaves with them either way. No strings attached. This offer is valid through September 30, 2026.
